Fundraising: Christmas Tree Sales
Our Christmas Tree sales fundraising program is a key source of funding for Scout activities ! Here's how it works:
- Our tree sales run from late November (weekend before Thanksgiving) through Christmas each year
- Scouts sign up for sales shift on our Pack 77 / Troop 1028 / Troop 1029 lot at 5th Street Station (Planet Fitness end, directly across from Krispy Kreme)
- We track the total hours worked by each Scout and at the end of the season, divide the total income by the hours worked for each Scout
- This total goes directly to their Scout account which they can use to pay for Troop activities such as summer camp, jamborees, outings, and other Scout-related activities
- Please post on social media in your neighborhoods to help spread the word, Mr. Eric posted the basic information to the Pack 77 and Troop 1028/1029 Facebook pages if you want to use that as a starter.
- All proceeds benefit Local Scouting!

Wrapping Up
Here is our recommended list of items to bring when you are working:
- Gloves (trees are sometimes pokey/sticky)
- Long-sleeves or a jacket (trees are sometimes pokey/sticky)
- Headlamp or flashlight (the parking lot lighting is quite good, but just in case you need to see better)
- Full water bottle
- Snacks if desired
- At least one adult per shift must have the Clover app on their phone to process credit card payments (more details below)
- It is a good idea to bring some cash change for the sales. It is not unusual to be given $100 bills, so be prepared.
Work Instructions
When you arrive for your shift:
- Padlock code to get into the shack is in Mr. Eric's email, enter that and squeeze the lock to release. When you are done for the night, remember to lock back by squeezing, and then scrambling the code
- The sales shack has all the tools you should need, including loppers, trimmers, scissors, broom/dustpan, trash bags, and twine
- There is a sales sheet on the clipboard inside the shack (see below), so fill out a new one for each day and record all sales there. The first shift should also check the secure drop-box contents so see if we got any self-service sales since the last shift, and accurately count the tree inventory. Record those on the sales sheet.
- During your shift, record and keep track of your trees sold and payments collected to keep them straight as you go
- If the twine accidently retracts into the shack, there are instructions inside on how to fix it
Helping Customers
- Collect payment and record your sales. Credit cards should use the Clover app, but if you get into a bind or have trouble with the app, customers can use the Venmo and Square QR codes on front of the sales shack, but those are really meant only for self-service sales.
- Give the customer a tree care instruction sheet - see below
- Ask each customer if they plan to put the tree in water within the next two hours, if so, use the bow saw to cut off the bottom one inch of the tree to create a fresh surface. If they are not going to put the tree in water soon, make sure they understand the recommended care sheet.
- Tie the tree to the top of their vehicle, see the directions on front of the sales shack and follow this awesome YouTube video:
- Wish the customer a Happy Holiday!
Wrapping Up
- A Scout is Clean! Pick up trash and place in bags provided. Sweep up needles, etc. and place in trash bags. Stack the stumps in a neat pile. Leave your lot better than you found it. Take all your trash home with you if you are the last shift - especially any stinky trash !
- Many of our customers return annually to purchase their trees from us. This is because our trees are high quality and we are Scouts! Be Helpful, Friendly, Courteous, Kind, and Cheerful!
