Our Troop Philosophy

Picture
Picture
Scouts BSA Troops 1028 (boys) and 1029 (girls) are affiliated Scout-led units. Ours is a value-based community, a proud and encouraging team. We foster and train engaged citizen leaders amidst an exciting atmosphere of fun and real adventure!

Our very diverse and skilled Scouters provide strong support for boys and girls seeking true self-reliance. We hope that Scouts ultimately become ready and prepared to do the right thing, doing their best wherever they are, whenever they can, with whatever they have.

The Scouts of Troop 1028 and 1029 advance at their own pace. While we strive to insure that Scouts advance as quickly as their initiative, skills, and understanding allow, our Scouts learn and earn their skills, awards, and ranks. The Scout Handbook is the key advancement guide and should be brought to every meeting.

Scouts progress according to their own pace within an encouraging, supportive structure. Whenever possible and feasible, Scouts teach their fellows, for this benefits both teacher and pupil.

Fortunately, we benefit from the support of a diverse, skilled, and committed group of Scouts and Scouters. Our active and varied program provides Scouts with lots of advancement opportunities. This makes it feasible for a Scout to obtain their First Class rank within a year of joining, but only if the Scout is motivated. As we like to say to all our Scouts: It is always your move!

Troop Meetings

Picture
Scouts BSA Troops 1028 and 1029 are in the Monticello District of the Virginia Headwaters Council (VAHC). In normal times, with the exception of school holidays and weather-related closings, we meet year-round every Monday evening from 7:00 to 8:30 pm at the St. Anne's-Belfield (STAB) School's Belfield Campus on 799 Faulconer Drive (just off the 250 Bypass, take the US 250 Business exit towards Ivy and immediately follow signs) in Charlottesville, Virginia.

For more detailed directions to the STAB Belfield campus, please see www.stab.org

Note that due to the ongoing pandemic, we are not allowed to meet at STAB so are alternating in-person off-site and virtual meetings weekly.  Email us for meeting details !

Troop History / Information

Some quick facts about Troop 1028 (male):
  • Troop 1028 was founded in 2002 and was originally chartered by the Moose Lodge 1028 in Keswick, Virginia
  • We moved to our current STAB Belfield Campus location in January 2015 and are now chartered by the Rimora Foundation
  • We currently have 51 active Scouts in Troop 1028

Some quick facts about Troop 1029 (female):
  • Troop 1029 was officially chartered on February 2, 2019 as the first official female Troop in the Monticello District
  • We share the same meetings with Troop 1028 in our STAB Belfield Campus location, and are also chartered by the Rimora Foundation
  • One of our Scouts earned her first Merit Badge (Horsemanship) on our very first day (2/2/2019), the first Merit Badge earned by a female Scout in the Monticello District
  • So far, two of our Scouts are in both Scouts BSA and Girl Scouts, and plan to pursue both the rank of Eagle Scout and the Girl Scout's Gold Award
  • So far, we have three families with Scouts in both Troops. This is one of the great features of the Scouts BSA program – female siblings can participate in all the same activities, earn the same awards, and go on all the same fun and amazing adventures.  It also makes it pretty convenient for parents if everyone is going to all the same Scouts BSA events!
  • Two of our Troop 1029 Scouts are twins, and their dad is an Eagle Scout. They were the first to sign up back in the Fall of 2018 !
  • We currently have 14 active Scouts in Troop 1029

How do our two amazing Troops operate together?
  • Except for Scoutmasters, both Troop 1028 and 1029 share the same Chartered Organization, Troop Committee, and most other adult leadership
  • Each Troop is Scout-led and elects its own Scout leadership (SPL, PL, etc.)
  • Each Troop has dedicated "Patrol time" during every meeting for work on rank advancement, Patrol bonding, and planning
  • All other aspects of the Scouting program are shared: we have the same Troop meetings, same events, same outings, etc.
  • However, both Troops are Scout-led so we also frequently have separate Troop and Patrol outings or special events
  • Just to keep it simple, most of this website uses "Troop 1028" to refer to both Troops
